The Sexual Medicine fellowship program at the Brady Urological Institute is an inaugural program that was put into effect in July 2011. The program has met approval of requirements for equivalency by the Graduate Medical Education Committee of The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. It is also certified by the Sexual Medicine Society of North America.
The training program aims to provide a framework consistent with the trainee attaining cognitive and technical skills necessary to be competent in the practice of sexual medicine. The prototypical training program consists of two major phases (or assignments), which aligns with the 2 year duration of the program: basic training and advanced training. Basic training (12 months) will consist of full-time, continuous in-office and operating room exposure regarding basic diagnostic and therapeutic management of sexual disorders. Advanced training (12 months) similarly will consist of full-time, continuous in-office and operating room exposure for diagnostic and therapeutic management of sexual disorders although the training will be performed at an advanced level. During the course of the program, trainees will also be involved in ongoing basic scientific or clinical research related to the field of sexual medicine. In special circumstances involving a candidate who has achieved post-residency clinical and surgical proficiencies, a modified training program may be designed at the discretion of the Program Director.
By the end of training, trainees should be able to execute graduate medicine competency -based goals and objectives. It is expected that graduates of this program will establish a career in academics or in a similar arena to be able to make major contributions in the field of sexual medicine. These contributions may involve leadership roles, publications, lectures and training, and performance of high-level clinical practice, e.g. prosthetic surgeries, pelvic/genital reconstruction, in the area of sexual l medicine.
