A Woman’s Guide to Urinary Incontinence
(Johns Hopkins University Press, December 2007)
UROLOGIST & GYNECOLOGIST SHED LIGHT ON ONCE TABOO SUBJECT
& EXPLAIN CURRENT TREATMENT OPTIONS
One in 8 women over age 40 will experience some degree of incontinence.
The causes of incontinence range from the normal effects of pregnancy, childbirth, menopause - and gravity on aging muscles - to pelvic surgery, obesity, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes, MS and stroke. You don’t have to be over 40 to have incontinence, though your chance of developing it increases with age. The great news is that because of the abundance of treatment options available to women today, the likelihood of finding an effective treatment (or combination of treatments) is extremely high.
Johns Hopkins Drs. Jacek L. Mostwin (urologist) and Rene Genadry (gynecologist) have combined expertise in their respective fields to write the first book on urinary incontinence in almost 2 decades (since Staying Dry, also a Johns Hopkins Press book)! A Woman’s Guide to Urinary Incontinence is an in-depth, reader-friendly guide to everything you ever wanted to know about incontinence, but may have been afraid to ask your doctor. (Many women with bladder problems suffer in silence because they are embarrassed about it.) It is also an invaluable reference for caretakers and primary care physicians who want to offer women the best care and direction possible.
The Drs. explain the different kinds of incontinence, methods of diagnosis, and what to expect in the examining room. Ways to manage and treat incontinence are explored in-depth, including lifestyle changes, exercises to strengthen pelvic floor muscles, medications and surgeries. Surgery choices are described with attention given to each option’s potential risks, side-effects, complications and chances for success, as well as what to expect pre-op, post-op and during recovery. Drs. Mostwin and Genadry sprinkle many real life case studies based on their own patients’ experiences and treatment choices throughout the book, adding a compelling human interest element and personal and professional insight.

The book’s message is that no matter how large or small your problem with incontinence you can take charge of the situation by educating yourself, seeking good medical evaluation, finding a doctor you are comfortable with, asking important questions, and giving yourself the time you need to decide which course of action is right for you. (If incontinence is minimal, a possible course of action may be no action at all.) Above all, don’t put up with incontinence that is a hindrance -- with so many viable treatment choices, there is no reason to let your ability to enjoy life trickle away!
